Six years ago, I developed a cartoon character named Dam’a (/Dam-aa/ Arabic: دمعة). Inspired by my own story as a feminist Palestinian woman in the middle of a cultural transition and an emotional growth, I brought Dam'a to life to focus on raising awareness for feminism and the importance of self improvement.
Dam’a is an Arab Palestinian woman, living in modern times, weighed down with old traditions and taboos of a conservative culture. I depict Dam’a doing the things that a modern feminist does; fight to get her voice heard, raise awareness, advocate for equality -- all while simultaneously maintaining her Arab roots.
Curious to see what Dam'a is up to next?
